Beesands Coastal Defence

Beesands - Erosion Control

Beesands is a small village located in the South Hams district of Devon, England. The village is located within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The AONB is a protected area of countryside that is managed by the South Devon AONB Partnership. As you may have gathered from the title of this case study, Beesands is situated on the coast. It is subject to strong storm waves which cause land erosion.

Due to Landmarc’s unique coastal defence experience, we were commissioned by South Hams District Council. We were to undertake a large coastal defence project at the Beesands site. This would involve excavation works and the installation of over 100 meters of rock armour.

Landmarc owns a range of excavators which made quick work of the initial excavation works. By using a combination of our 14ton Volvo EC140 and our 22ton Liebherr R922 long reach, we were able to work efficiently. This helped to keep costs to a minimum.

Beesands - TECCO Cell Innovations

This is the very exciting ‘TECCO Cell’. A Geobrugg product that was developed in partnership with some of our team members. It’s an extremely effective alternative to traditional sea defences such as rock armour. It has a low ecological impact. In 2015 South Hams District Council issued tenders for work to repair the failed defences at Beesands. SHDC requested an innovative alternative to traditional rock armour. They needed to form a 20m section to be the new defences. The Landmarc team came up with a solution using specialist high-tensile stainless-steel mesh. This prototype ‘cell’ was installed in 2016, alongside the repaired rock armour. Storms continued to impact the village green, threatening the properties behind. The prototype TECCO Cell worked so well that in 2021 an improved TECCO Cell system was commissioned. It was to be installed further along the beach to protect the village’s green and residential properties. The TECCO Cell is now a patented system. It has been developed in partnership with Geobrugg. They are global experts in the production of high-tensile stainless-steel mesh. The system is now being considered as a solution for coastal erosion worldwide in countries such as: Oman, Japan, France, Italy, Chile, USA and Germany. A liftable version of the cell has also been designed and is being marketed worldwide.
