Undertake Silt Removal With Landmarc

Lake desilting is essential for maintaining a healthy wildlife lake. Over the course of many years, lakes & ponds fill up with mud and silt as aquatic plants break down. This build-up of silt will cause shallower lakes. The silt build-up will not only increase the risk of flooding but also reduce the oxygen levels in the lake. The reduced oxygen level will have a significant impact on the lake’s biodiversity.

Landmarc has extensive experience in desilting & restoring lakes using a variety of methods. When we undertake silt removal, we make sure that all the methods we use are cost-effective & ecologically friendly. We do this by using up-to-date plant & equipment operated by trained and experienced operators.

How Landmarc Remove Silt From Large Lakes

When removing silt from a large lake, we find it best to make sure that the lake is drained of water. This can be achieved in a variety of ways as many lakes have sluice gates to drain them. Otherwise, a water/silt removal pump can be used to clear large volumes of lake water. Once the water is drained, we can methodically remove excess sediment. We do this by using our excavators and their specialist attachments. The sediment is loaded into tracked dumpers for either transport off-site or for later use on-site. Once the lake is at the correct depth, we can begin grading and reshaping the bottom as well as the shoreline. Now that the pool has been de-silted, it is best for a new pool liner to be installed. This ensures that no water will escape from the newly restored pool.

Why Lake Desilting Will Benefit Your Lake

Lake & pond desilting work is crucial to improving the health of a lake. Dredging silt removal allows us to clear mud that has collected at the lake’s bottom. Removing the overload of silt greatly improves the ability of aquatic plants to filter out impurities. Not only that, but it improves lake water quality. It does so by decreasing the amount of stagnation, which will also improve the overall health of your lake. It also provides other benefits such as increased biodiversity for fish. Another benefit includes a reduced flood risk due to the deeper lake depth.

Wildlife ponds & lakes greatly benefit from desilting as it presents the freedom to create new and improved habitats. Landmarc excels at this by using its civil engineering landscape experience. We do this by making use of the silt that is dredged from the lake to create wetland habitats. This can be in the form of reed beds as well as forming islands which can be planted with suitable aquatic plants.

Landmarc Can Improve Your Lake's Aquatic Biodiversity

Aquatic biodiversity plays an important role in the ecological health of your lake. There are many benefits that come from increasing biodiversity. For example, biodiverse lakes serve as homes for a range of aquatic species. They work to provide food and serve as a carbon sink. By increasing your lake’s biodiversity you play a vital part in the aquatic food chain. These food chains will support various native aquatic wildlife. This is great for wildlife and makes for a great human attraction.

You can become a leader in aquatic biodiversity. This will benefit you both practically and environmentally. Your efforts will work to enhance nutrient cycling. In turn, leading to more effective soil fertilisation and improved overall water clarity. Choosing conservation strategies such as desilting will conserve aquatic life. This is important to maintain the balance of natural life in your natural lake. These strategies support resources for generations of wildlife to come.

How Desilting Helps With Aquatic Weed Control

Aquatic weed control is difficult to undertake in lakes. Mainly, because they can only be treated using the bank or from a boat. Sedimentation caused by aquatic weeds also decreases oxygen levels in the water column. This makes it impossible for certain species of plants to survive. Lake & pond silt removal often leads to an increase in water lily control. The decreased silt level and improved biodiversity help keep the water lilies in check. This means that there is more open space for aquatic plants to thrive. Which makes it much easier for aquatic weed identification in the future.

The desilting process also helps with aquatic weed management. One way is by increasing water clarity. This, in turn, allows sunlight to penetrate deeper into the water. This leads to a growth spurt in plankton species that are often used as food by small fish. This is key for wildlife ponds & lakes. Decreased competition for food sources and an abundance of new space for them to thrive in, can lead to a healthy increase in biodiversity.
